The High Court directed that benefits for interfaith marriages should be provided to individuals from different religions. The action was taken in a petition filed by Gisha, a native of Kottayam. The court overturned the state government's argument that Gisha's marriage was merely an inter-religious marriage and thus ineligible for reservation benefits. Gisha, belonging to the Roman Catholic Christian community, married Nishu Somana from the Hindu Scheduled Caste community.
